Description:

First Star University of Miami Academy (FSUM) is a four-year college preparation program for high school students impacted by the foster care system. FSUM has a summer residential program with a daytime youth enrichment component, which is funded by The Children's Trust. The cornerstone of FSUM is the youth enrichment program where 50 foster youth participate in multi-faceted programming focused on academics, life skills, career exploration, and social-emotional development. The program shows youth that they belong on a college campus and helps them to get there.

During the summer sessions, youth are supported by highly qualified professionals, as well as college student mentors, some of whom are former foster youth. The program's holistic model embedded within a university campus responds to the unique needs of children in foster care who often do not participate in college readiness programs due to instability and trauma. FSUM does this by incorporating trauma-informed strategies, building youth's social-emotional skills, fostering healthy relationships with adult caregivers and mentors, and providing educational and legal advocacy, in addition to offering a rigorous curriculum to address both the remedial and college prep needs of its students.
