Special Interest Clubs
Programs that provide organized opportunities for individuals who have an interest in the theater to gain acting and stage experience for pleasure and amusement by joining a local theater group.
Student-run clubs (typically in a middle school or high school, or on college/university campuses) which provide a safe place for students to meet, support one another, talk about issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity, and work to address homophobia and transphobia. Many GSAs function as a support group and provide safety and confidentiality to students who are struggling with their identity as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning. In addition to support, some GSAs work on educating themselves and the broader school community about sexual orientation and gender identity issues. They may bring in outside speakers to cover a particular topic such as LGBTQ history. They may organize a "Pride Week" or "LGBTQ Awareness Events" and offer a series of educational workshops, panels and pride celebrations. Other GSAs are activist clubs and have worked to get LGBTQ issues represented in the curriculum, LGBTQ related books in the library, and progressive non-discrimination policies implemented at a district level. All of these different types of GSAs also provide a social outlet for LGBTQ students and their straight allies. GSAs help to build community at schools and lessen the isolation that LGBTQ students might otherwise experience.
Programs that provide organized opportunities for individuals who play a musical instrument or enjoy a particular style of singing to join a group and play or sing collaboratively with others who have the same skills and interests or to listen to the music of their choice in the company of other enthusiasts.
Programs that provide organized opportunities for individuals to pursue their interest in designing, making and finishing garments and craft items, often through the medium of a club or society which is under the leadership of people who are knowledgeable in the subject. Activities may include lectures by people with expertise in the craft; demonstrations of techniques; and regular meetings at which members share tips and information about current projects, work on individual or joint projects (some of which may be charitable) and enjoy the company of other enthusiasts. Some clubs may also provide facilities for work on the craft, arrange for discounts on materials and tools, sponsor exhibits or sales of clothing or art pieces created by members, publish a newsletter or provide a library of resources about the craft. Included are Internet-based virtual clubs, WebRings devoted to the subject and clubs where members meet face-to-face.
Wildlife Appreciation Societies
Programs that provide organized opportunities for individuals to pursue their interest in birds, animals, fish, reptiles, insects or other species, often through the medium of a club or society that is under the leadership of people who are knowledgeable in the subject. Activities may include lectures, slide show or other presentations that provide information about different species, their habitats and their habits; expeditions that enable participants to observe and enjoy wildlife in the out-of-doors; and opportunities for members to share their own experiences with wildlife. Included are Internet-based virtual clubs, WebRings devoted to the subject and clubs where members meet face-to-face.
