Artist Communities

Programs that provide a supported living environment in urban or rural settings in which artists have the time, space and collegial stimulation to pursue their creative interests. Artists' communities may be multidisciplinary or may limit eligibility to artists of a particular type, e.g., writers, musicians or painters; choose residents based on their abilities; and provide housing, work space, exhibit space and necessary equipment and facilities, e.g., photographic darkrooms, digital imaging facilities, ceramic and printmaking facilities. Some provide meals, laundry facilities and a living or materials stipend. Artists are generally responsible for their travel and may be residents for varying periods of time from two weeks to three years or more.
